Simon Hobart, promoter & DJ of Popstarz, Ghetto and Trash Palace sadly passed away on the 23rd of October.

Simon sadly passed away after a heavy night of drinking, and was found by neighbours the next morning.

Simon started his DJ career by working at the legendary gothic haunt Kitcat in the eighties. Following the huge success of the night, he went on to open another club that became a legend of its time, Bedrock; first at Oxfords nightclub, and then later at the world famous Marquee. His growing reputation led to to prestigious residencies at Pyramid and Rage, both at the world famous Heaven nightclub. Always keen to explore fresh ideas, Simon then moved into Drum and Bass - opening two major underground DnB nights - Fusion and Vivid - both having capacities of about 1200 people.

Later, turning to his passion for indie music as a source of inspiration for a new gay clubbing idea, he took a leap of faith and started Popstarz on May 25th 1995. The night has snowballed, changing venue five times, each time growing in size and popularity. In 2003 Popstarz was invited to San Francisco to take part in their Mardi Gras event.

Simon was a major influence on the London clubbing scene. Following the huge rise and rise of Popstarz, Simon has gone on to launch other hugely successful nights including Miss-Shapes, Wig Out, and LoveBite, adding yet more flavour to the gay alternative scene in London - a scene that he has almost single handedly helped to create. He launched Ghetto, a club in Soho dedicated to providing a true alternative from the spendy, showy bars of Soho and a haven for music that does not fit into the traditional gay clubbing calendar. The club has been a runaway success with many of the nights becoming leaders of their respective alternative scenes.

Simon was named as one of the twenty most influential UK-based gays and lesbians by The Observer's Dominic Lutyens (September 2003).

He will be greatly missed

'memorabilia'

I used to go to the Kit Kat Club at the Comedy Store during the 1980's. It was my favorite club. You used to very kindly approach me and say hello which genuinely touched me. You gave me a free ticket for the New Years party. I still, some twenty three years later, have in my collection of 80's 'memorabilia'. It has your signature drawn across it.
I think of you and those days and wished to do what you were doing. Although I hardly knew you I was moved by your spirit both when you were here and now that you're gone. I can't believe I'm still here. How did I get this far????

God bless you...............

You made me feel alive

Simon,
I want to thank you for memories I will always treasure. Wednesday's at Heaven 'Pyramid' and the song that got us chatting 'Chains' Mimmo Mix, will always remind me of you.

I fell for you after 'that' night doing the lights for you at Heaven but things were not meant to be. 'll always remember you as one of the most special and talented people I have ever known. You had a heart of gold, and proved that when you came back to the bus stop and drove me home in your battered old Beetle :)

I hope you are having an amazing time wherever you are and one day we will meet again.

You'll always be in my heart

DANCE WITH FEELING

Dear Simon,
You helped to create a big part of my life and I will always have special memories of all the fun that my friends and I had at Fusion at the Marquee, Vivid at Paradise Club and at Heaven Club.
I'm really sad to hear that you passed away and hope that you're smiling down from heaven.
Lots of love Jen (still dancing with feeling!) XXXX

An inspiration

We lived on the same estate for a while, and we always nodded polite hellos down in the depths of Ghetto, Marvellous and Popstarz.
You were always very courteous and your presence in London's clubland is still missed.
Thanks for Goth, D&B and Indie.
Thanks for sharing.
May the Light of Spirit embrace you.

An open letter to Simon .Oct 25th 2007

Dear Simon.
I have only read about your death,Ive been away from the gay scene for so long i simply never heard.I cannot get my head around it.....Peace be with you young man.

I worked at the Rockgarden in Covent Garden circa 1984-6 and you used to come down for drinks and promote the KitKat with your friend who looked like Plug from the beano was he called Nigel?
Anyway you always looked so amazing in head to toe black and i always remember you had so many rings on you looked simply stunning.and i loved your black spikey hair...being a goth and not 'out' you did scare me as you used to come on to me.i never used to mind you know but i wasnt GAY and proud like i am now at 41.
You were always such a lovely warm person.and your club nights were legend.
There is one star missing down here and one more in the sky.

Lots of love

Robert

a letter from heaven

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...

but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.

I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above

Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight

Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,

God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.

As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on

I need you here badly; you're part of my plan

There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do

And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.

And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight

God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years

because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.

But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain

Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned

But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.

But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.

I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;

but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.

It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...

that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,

then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."

And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,

knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,

just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go

When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;

I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,

remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
